I had a Maternal Great-Great-Uncle who served during WWI, in the Calvary. I was very, very young when he used to tell me stories about being in ”The War.” He was wounded in the leg during the War and walked with the aid of a crutch for many years. Several of his comrades died during Mustard Gas attacks. He was too old to serve in WWII, much to his everlasting disgust. But he did his part by growing his Victory Garden and participating in many care drives at home for the wounded. He supported the troops in Korea, and later in Vietnam – although the protests and politics against the troops made him very angry. He died before the War in Vietnam ended. I will always remember him as a Citizen – Soldier: not a career military man, but an American that who was proud to have served his Country in battle, and one that would forever answer the call – if allowed.
